In which a post suddenly occurs.

Oh, look. A neglected blog. Time and again, I’ve thought about returning, about creating new posts or leaving some sort of note. I’ve thought about it, and I’ve thought about it (“Do I dare and do I dare?”, if we want to be Prufrock about it). Time crept up, intervened, and I drifted elsewhere, only thinking about it.

So. Here ends the casual thinking-about, and check it out: a post hath appeared. We’ll see how well this flies (whether I actually begin to post anything, at all), and where it goes. I am, after all, in a bit of a different place than when last I posted.

To explain a bit. This blog was originally established as part of a class at Wayne State University (to be a bit more specific, Lisa Maruca’s “18th-Century Media Matrix”; hence the 18th-centric posts). Students in the class were expected to keep more or less weekly blogs on or related to the week’s reading. Though I found that I rather enjoyed blogging, the blog fell out of use once the class ended and other pursuits arose. And even aside from the fact that the class ended, the situation’s changed a bit. After a semester of working toward an English MA, I chose to leave Wayne State; suffice to say that while the courses were intriguing enough, the path wasn’t taking me in a direction I’d like to go (may return to this subject in a future post, if the mad urge strikes).

What (or who, if you prefer) does that make me? Aside from a drifter, a bum, an inveterate wanderer (such designations stand true in some senses, exaggerated in others). Recently, a student and an intern of the theater-dwelling variety (dramaturgy in three cases), holder of various, not-so-long-lived jobs. Currently attempting to sort out various matters and options (perhaps “bum” is indeed an apt term for this, for me), substitute teaching here and there, seeking further employment and, oh, always on the prowl for further answers and further questions. None of which defines me, I don’t think, but all of which plays into it.

In any case. Certainly, the reading and studying (and, one might hope, brain-functioning) hasn’t just sort of ended with the classes. And I wish (and likely ought) to make a more concentrated effort to write down responses… To generally write, really. BS or otherwise (often, it all seems to boil down to BS, so eh, c’est the way). So, hey, looks like this blog may see a bit of life, after all.

The blog will doubtless wend away in different directions. While 18th-century Britain certainly intrigues and offers no end of matter for mulling, my inclinations of interest tend to run in other directions. What is to come? Can’t say for certain. Perhaps thoughts on current reading. Perhaps attempts at theater reviews. Perhaps accounts of the early evening habits of hedgehogs. Anything that comes to mind, so we’ll call it an adventure into new (for this blog) terrain, its content potentially much-scattered in terms of topic (I do so enjoy the scattered and fragmented, though will try to stray from posting too many fragments).

Fair enough for an introduction, or re-introduction? I think so, or will call it so. We’ll see how well I actually stick to this, but hey, here goes. Thrilling times and happy trails.

  1. I like your new background. Also, I will probably be around to read your musings on hedgehogs, if you write any. I agree (much to my chagrin) that ye olde blog has fallen on a bit of disuse. School and life got a bit in the way, but, when something strikes me as interesting in a book-geek sort of way, I still make an effort to post. In fact, I expect to be doing more once I'm free from all the rigmarole of my MA. I freely invite you to come take a look.

But if you decide not to stay in the blog-o-sphere, good luck and best wishes chasing after hedgehogs.
